Similar in process and sentiment to a birth doula, a death doula serves a dying person and their loved ones, providing spiritual and emotional support before, during and after the dying process. A doula is an objective, compassionate advocate and companion who aids in any of the following ways: Provide education about the dying process from a physical, emotional, and spiritual lens. Engaging in a 'life review', processing and reflecting upon important life events. Facilitation of meaningful conversations with friends and loved ones, which may include working through unresolved issues. Collaborating on a legacy project: short memoir, short documentary style film or a bound book/collage project; these will reflect on important life events and words of wisdom. Vigil planning: honoring your wishes for your final moments including the aesthetic of the setting, visitors, music, important rituals, readings, prayers, etc. Sitting vigil. Processing with loved ones after death has taken place.
